Homemade Jello

This is the delicious desert I made for Easter with the family. Doesn’t this just look yummy and healthy?

Homemade “jello” is super easy to make and is a great healthy treat. I don’t use the Jello brand gelatin because there is msg, sugar, artificial flavors and other questionable ingredients in it. I use Great Lakes Unflavored Gelatin which contains no msg, sulfites or processing aids and is also free of wheat, dairy, corn, soy and other allergens.

Here’s how easy it is to make homemade jello:

First determine what flavor you want, I used strawberry. Thaw out a bag of frozen organic strawberries and mash them up with about two cups of water and about 3tbsp of honey. If you want it a little sweeter you can add a little stevia (I love the berry flavored one) or you can always add a little more honey. You can also use fresh fruit and if you do will want to make a simple syrup or juicing it, depending on what fruit you use. For example, if you want orange jello, juice a couple oranges but if you want blueberry or cranberry make a syrup.

Next heat up about 1/3 cup of water until warm, not boiling, and add 3tbsp of gelatin slowly while stirring until it is completely dissolved. I like to use a whisk, but don’t whisk too fast or you will get bubbles!

Next, pour the gelatin mixture into the berry mixture and slowly stir until mixed. Then pour the well mixed mixture into the container(s) you want them in and put in the fridge for a couple hours to gel.

Once gelled you can eat it plain, or like I did in the picture, whip up some cream to spread on the top and top with fresh berries.

So, that’s it! A super healthy, yummy treat.

I should mention- if you are on the GAPS diet, cream is not allowed because of the lactose (milk sugar). You can eliminate the cream and the honey too, if you haven’t gotten to that stage yet.

Yours looks fabulous! I tried making this tonight and well it didn’t come out. I don’t know what I did wrong. The mixture didn’t completely set. Some parts are gel and the some are still liquid. Have you had this happen before? This is my first time using Great Lakes. Can It be saved? We may just be eating strawberry soup.

    • Linnae says:

Oh no!!!! I have had this happen once before and I think it was because I didn’t mix it good enough when I added the gelatin. I don’t know if you can save it as a “jello” but you could always use it on top of ice cream or toast or something? 🙂

      • Catherine says:

Thanks! We just ate it as is. I’ll try it again another time. It was still good.
